Many oriental herbs marketed to day claim to provide wonderful health benefits. Though most of these herbs have not been studied thoroughly and not approved by FDA for public use, yet herbalists assure improved health provided by certain oriental herbs are described and discussed here. The four herbs are Dong Quai, Echinacea, Ginger and Kava Kava.
Dong Quai
A relative of celery plant, Dong Quai grows between May and August, with jugged edged leaves and greenish white flowers. It is referred to as women s Ginseng and presented for menstrual pain in America. It is prescribed for both men and women in China to check high blood pressure and prevent cardio vascular diseases.
This oriental herb has a great influence on the central nervous system and is effective in insomnia, nervousness, migraines and constipation. Its main side effect is sensitivity to sunlight in fair skinned patients. So patients who take this herb should not expose themselves to sunlight for a prolonged period.
Echinacea
A common and very popular herbal supplement, Echinacea, increases the person s natural immunity by stimulating the growth of white blood cells. All of the herbs benefits are not yet studies but it helps AIDS patients to fight infections and increases the immunity systems of patients taking immunosuppressant treatments. Many people take this herb for colds and other illness.
Ginger
Ginger, and oriental herb, is an antidote for vomiting, diarrhea, bloating and rheumatism. It is used for motion sickness also. Ginger and over the counter medications have the same effect. People say that it can be used for headaches to arthritis and tooth aches and heartburn. But there is no scientific proof for the claims made. Ginger has almost nil side effects. Kava Kava
A tall tropical plant, kava kava s root is used to manage and cure anxiety and stress. In small doses it improves awareness but large doses act against and bring drowsiness cardiac and blood pressure from other problems, are treated by kava kava root. Kava root, according to FDA brings in liver failure and so people with weak liver should avoid taking kava kava.
