How to Use

Step 1: Enter Your Information

  1. Age (years): Enter your current age in years. This is an important factor in calculating cardiovascular risk, as risk generally increases with age.
  2. Diabetes Duration (years): Enter the number of years you’ve been diagnosed with diabetes. Longer duration can contribute to higher cardiovascular risk.
  3. HbA1c (%): Enter your most recent HbA1c value, a measure of average blood glucose control over the past 2-3 months. Higher values may indicate a need for improved diabetes management.
  4. Systolic BP (mmHg): Enter your current systolic blood pressure in mmHg. High blood pressure is a known risk factor for cardiovascular issues.
  5. LDL (mg/dL): Enter your latest LDL cholesterol level. Elevated LDL (“bad” cholesterol) levels can increase cardiovascular risk.
  6. Toggle Options: For each option, select “Yes” if applicable by toggling the switch:
    • Current Smoker: Select if you are currently smoking.
    • Microalbuminuria: Select if you have been diagnosed with microalbuminuria (a marker of kidney issues often associated with diabetes).
    • Previous CV Event: Select if you have a history of cardiovascular events, such as a heart attack or stroke.

Step 2: Calculate Risk

  1. Click on the Calculate Risk button. The button will briefly change to “Calculating…” to indicate the calculation is in progress.
  2. Wait a moment for the app to process your inputs. The results section will appear below the calculator with a summary of your cardiovascular risk level.

Step 3: Analyze the Results

Once the calculation is complete, the results section will display the following information:

1. 10-Year CV Risk Percentage

  • This percentage represents your estimated 10-year risk of developing cardiovascular issues based on the inputs you provided. A higher percentage indicates a greater risk.

2. Risk Category

  • The app categorizes your risk into one of four levels:
    • Low Risk: Generally indicates a lower likelihood of cardiovascular issues in the next 10 years. (The risk percentage is minimal, around 0-5%.)
    • Moderate Risk: Suggests a moderate likelihood of cardiovascular events. (Risk percentage typically ranges from 5% to under 15%.)
    • High Risk: Implies a significant chance of cardiovascular issues, recommending more intensive monitoring and interventions. (Risk percentage is between 15% and 30%.)
    • Very High Risk: Indicates a high probability of cardiovascular events and a need for immediate intervention and lifestyle changes. (Risk percentage is 30% or higher.)

3. Risk Percentage Visualization

  • A progress bar will show the risk percentage visually, with different colors indicating different risk levels.
    • Green for Low Risk
    • Yellow for Moderate Risk
    • Orange for High Risk
    • Red for Very High Risk

4. Recommendations

  • Based on your risk level and specific input values, the app provides personalized recommendations to help reduce cardiovascular risk.
  • For example:
    • If your HbA1c level is above the target range, you might see a recommendation to work with your healthcare provider on glucose control.
    • If your Systolic BP or LDL levels are elevated, lifestyle adjustments and potential medication discussions may be recommended.
    • If you’re a smoker, you may receive guidance on smoking cessation support.
    • For higher risk categories (High and Very High Risk), regular cardiovascular check-ups and preventive strategies are suggested.

Example Walkthrough

Suppose you enter the following values:

  • Age: 50
  • Diabetes Duration: 10 years
  • HbA1c: 8.0%
  • Systolic BP: 140 mmHg
  • LDL: 110 mg/dL
  • Smoking: Yes
  • Microalbuminuria: No
  • Previous CV Event: No

After clicking “Calculate Risk,” you might see:

  • 10-Year CV Risk Percentage: 20.5%
  • Risk Category: High Risk
  • Recommendations:
    • Improve glucose control with your healthcare team, as HbA1c is above target.
    • Consider lifestyle changes and discuss blood pressure medication with your doctor, as your blood pressure is elevated.
    • Dietary changes and possibly statin therapy to lower LDL cholesterol.
    • Quit smoking to significantly reduce cardiovascular risk.
    • Regular cardiovascular check-ups.
