There are several factors causing the swelling of glands under the chin. They are:
1.Virus and Bacterial Infections: The common and major cause for the swollen glands under chin is infection due to virus which leads to common cold. There are
also other types such as bacterial and parasitic infections which also causes swelling of glands under the chin. This infection increases the count of white blood cells for responding to the foreign object and hence the swelling of gland happens.
2.Other Common Infections: Apart from virus and bacterial infections, there are other common infections that cause swollen glands under chin. Those infections
are: measles, strep throat, abscessed or infected tooth; wound infections like erysipelas or cellulitis, ear infections, HIV which causes AIDS, flu, cold, mononucleosis. These infections lead to swelling of glands in neck, swelling of glands under chin, mouth sore, tonsillitis, gingivitis, and skin infections.
3.Occurrence of Tuberculosis, Cat Scratch Fever, and Syphilis: Some uncommon infections such as tuberculosis, sexually transmitted diseases like syphilis and
cat scratch fever which is an infection from bacteria by cat bite or scratch can also be the cause of swollen glands under chin.
4.Toxoplasmosis: Toxoplasmosis is a parasitic infection which results from the contact with feces of infected cat or by taking undercooked meat. This
Toxoplasmosis can also cause swollen glands under chin.
5.Blood Cancer: The malignant and uncontrolled multiplication of the lymphocytes as in leukemia and lymphoma causes swelling of glands under the chin.
6.Disorders in Immune System: Disorders in the immune system can also cause this condition. One such disorder is lupus, an inflammatory disease that targets
skin, joints, blood cells, heart, lungs and kidney. Other one is rheumatoid arthritis- which targets the tissues that line up the joints.
7.Side Effects of Medications: In rare cases, the side effects of medications such as anti seizure medications like phenytoin and malaria preventive medications
can also cause swollen glands under the chin.
8.Epstein Barr Virus: This is a kind of virus which is the major reason for tonsillitis and also swelling of glands under the chin.
9.Improper Diet: Lack of nutrient foods and improper diet is an indirect cause for the swollen glands under the chin.
10.Other Rare Causes: Anxiety and depression, chronic constipation, osteoarthritis and carpel tunnel syndrome are other rare causes of swollen glands under
chin.
